Scherzer, 30, won the AL Cy Young in 2013. He has struck out 492 batters in 434 innings over the last two seasons.
Some wonder if signing Scherzer could hasten a trade of Jordan Zimmermann, who has been rumored to be on the move as he enters his last year under contract.
